Summary

Death is her destiny。

Half British Reaper, half Japanese Shinigami, Ren Scarborough has been collecting souls in the London streets for centuries。 Expected to obey the harsh hierarchy of the Reapers who despise her, Ren conceals her emotions and avoids her tormentors as best she can。

When her failure to control her Shinigami abilities drives Ren out of London, she flees to Japan to seek the acceptance she’s never gotten from her fellow Reapers。 Accompanied by her younger brother, the only being on earth to care for her, Ren enters the Japanese underworld to serve the Goddess of Death… only to learn that here, too, she must prove herself worthy。 Determined to earn respect, Ren accepts an impossible task—find and eliminate three dangerous Yokai demons—and learns how far she’ll go to claim her place at Death’s side。

I absolutely loved this book! I thought it was original and very well done for a ya book。 The plot and characters were great and it had a fun twist。 Left on a cliff hanger and o can not wait for the second book!

It’s so unnervingly poetic in how it’s written and the descriptions are incredible。 Also, I didn’t realize that Japanese lore is bloody TERRIFYING。 It felt like I was stuck in a nightmare version of Spirited Away。Can’t wait for the next book! 。。。more

4。5Over all this was a fantastic YA dark fantasy。 I loved the Japanese folklore and Neven。 I also loved the ending。 Ren is a very morally gray character and it is very hard to like her, but it really makes the whole book even better in the end。 I really enjoyed this book。

I too will be wandering the darkness looking for my missing soul until book two comes out。

Probably more of a 4。5。 Ren is a Reaper, a being who reaps souls of the people in London, but she has never felt like she belongs。 She is half reaper and half Japanese Shinigami, and has never met her mother。 After an incident involving a fellow Reaper, she decides to leave it all behind and head to her native land to become a Shinigami and hopefully finally become accepted。 She is joined on this journey by her Reaper half brother, Neven。 Once in Japan, she has to set out on tasks killing yokai, Probably more of a 4。5。 Ren is a Reaper, a being who reaps souls of the people in London, but she has never felt like she belongs。 She is half reaper and half Japanese Shinigami, and has never met her mother。 After an incident involving a fellow Reaper, she decides to leave it all behind and head to her native land to become a Shinigami and hopefully finally become accepted。 She is joined on this journey by her Reaper half brother, Neven。 Once in Japan, she has to set out on tasks killing yokai, or demons, to earn her place as a Shinigami。 I really liked the magic, demons, and world building。 Wish the transitions between chapters was a little better and at times seemed a little rushed, but I'm really looking forward to the second part of this series to come out and see how it all ends。 。。。more

This book was pretty good。 I really enjoyed the Japanese Mythology。 That was super interesting。 The book was definitely a debut novel。 It was kinda clunky and cheesy at some points。 I really empathized with the character。 I was given no connection to my Lebanese background growing up。 I feel really disconnected with an entire branch of my family so I definitely understood the where the main character was coming from。 The romance felt really forced。 I was not a huge fan of it。 Nevan's character w This book was pretty good。 I really enjoyed the Japanese Mythology。 That was super interesting。 The book was definitely a debut novel。 It was kinda clunky and cheesy at some points。 I really empathized with the character。 I was given no connection to my Lebanese background growing up。 I feel really disconnected with an entire branch of my family so I definitely understood the where the main character was coming from。 The romance felt really forced。 I was not a huge fan of it。 Nevan's character was very strange。 I will probably read the 2nd one once it comes out。 。。。more

I’m now fully intrigued by Japanese folklore and I want more! I cannot wait for the sequel to this debut novel! This book was better than expected。 I really enjoyed the dark mythical creatures surrounding everything that is DEATH。 I can see how some people thought it was underwhelming as it did have some writing flaws, but I felt like the writing was to the point, great plot, and detailed enough to understand what was going on。 Not every fantasy novel needs to be a 500+ page, 7 book series in or I’m now fully intrigued by Japanese folklore and I want more! There are definitely some solid things about this book。First the premise of doing a book essentially about Grim Reapers is super creative and then using mythology and legends to explain how reapers work (and what they're called) in different parts of the world was fascinating。 Our main character is half Reaper (British) and half Japanese (I can't spell what they call them) and she's never fit in in England, where her father is an ass and she knows nothing about her mother。 So when a bully nearly There are definitely some solid things about this book。First the premise of doing a book essentially about Grim Reapers is super creative and then using mythology and legends to explain how reapers work (and what they're called) in different parts of the world was fascinating。 Our main character is half Reaper (British) and half Japanese (I can't spell what they call them) and she's never fit in in England, where her father is an ass and she knows nothing about her mother。 So when a bully nearly kills her and her Japanese powers come to light (literally) she knows she's on borrowed time。 She and her half brother travel to Japan in search of her mother and she's hoping they will be safe and protected。In order to join the ranks of the Japanese Reaper's she's handed three dangerous tasks and with the help of the mysterious Hiro and her brother, she completes them only to find out that that Japanese Death Goddess is up to no good and Hiro is her unwanted son。 Hiro kills his mother, wants to marry Ren and send her brother away。 But when Ren finally sees the light that Hiro is also evil, she kills him and tries to find her brother in the deep darkness。I suspect her brother is still alive thanks to her mother (who was also sent to the darkness)。 But whether he forgives her remains to be seen。 Our main character is VERY annoying。 She complains all the time, she's mean, and yes she has suffered but how she treats others is awful and honestly she is just unlikeable, but badass。 –DiAngelea Millar 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Hmmm。 I loved this so much to start。 The world and its mechanics were really interesting to read about and kept me going, but some characterizations didn’t make sense to me。 I never once felt like Ren didn’t care about Neven’s feelings despite being told over and over again that she couldn’t summon empathy for his softness。 Their relationship was actually one of my favorite parts of this story and I liked the idea that Ren was battling selfishness for her brother, but every time she turned on hi Hmmm。 I loved this so much to start。 The world and its mechanics were really interesting to read about and kept me going, but some characterizations didn’t make sense to me。 I never once felt like Ren didn’t care about Neven’s feelings despite being told over and over again that she couldn’t summon empathy for his softness。 Their relationship was actually one of my favorite parts of this story and I liked the idea that Ren was battling selfishness for her brother, but every time she turned on him it didn’t make sense。 The last quarter of the story was also strange to me。 I could have gotten whiplash from the pacing between Hiro killing Izanami, Ren feeling betrayed Hiro, Ren agreeing to marry Hiro, and then Ren feeling betrayed by Hiro again。 On the point of Hiro, I knew he was going to end up shady but I don’t feel like there were enough hints dropped about his past and true character? He had secrets, but I feel like he flipped a 180 in character when they were facing the kitsune。 His relationship with Ren was also really odd in a way I didn’t personally vibe with。 Despite a rough ending, I’ll probably still pick up the sequel。 I loved Neven and Ren (the idea of her) and the world they live in。 Plus, I would personally love to see how they end up kicking Hiro’s ass because I didn’t care for him at all。 。。。more

I must say that it was the premise that drew me to this book。 Lately, I have been in the mood for fantasy books that are not the usual medieval European vibe。 Don't get me wrong, I still love those books, but I’ve just been wanting something different。 I have read a few fantasy books that deal with Chinese mythology, but very few that deal with Japanese mythology。 I must say that it was had me hooked。 We start out in London with a little bit of British mythology, then we move to Japan and see its mythology in all of its glory。 Ren is our main character。 She is part Reaper and part Shinigami。 She feels like she doesn’t belong with the Reapers because of her Shinigami blood。 Yet, she doesn’t belong with the Shinigami-a lot of which has to do with the fact that she has never met one。 She feels this great divide between what she should be and, as a result, just wants to fit in。 This idea of wanting to fit in and wanting to belong is what drives her to make the choices that she makes。 A lot of her choices are not the best, but if you have ever felt like you didn’t belong, you know what it’s like。 Once you find people who accept you for who you are, you will find yourself doing whatever it takes to make sure that sense of belonging doesn’t leave you。 One thing that I really liked about this one was the deep exploration of brother-sister relationship。 Ren’s younger brother, Neven, drops his entire world to be there for his sister。 We see him give up his family, his friends, and everything that he has ever known in order to come with her to Japan。 He does so without a question, without a compliant。 He does for the love of his sister-even though it does put in a bad situation。 Stop and think about that。 How many siblings would give up everything that they have ever known for their sister? You may be surprised to realize that it’s not that many。 I would have liked to have seen a lot more of this。 Granted, the book does deal with this a lot, but still。。。It would not have bothered me if this is what the entire book was about。 The writing is pretty solid。 Just be prepared though that this is a YA title。 The only reason I am pointing that out is because Book of the Month doesn’t really feature a lot of YA titles。 It does not have the adult writing if that is something you are looking for。 However, it does have a solid world, solid characters, and a different magic system。 I mean, our main characters work in death。。。。What’s not to like about that idea? Anyway, if you are looking for a different sort of YA book, I highly encourage you to pick this one up。 。。。more

this is a tough one to rate。 i mean, you can’t go wrong with japanese mythology, and the author does create a decent sense of atmosphere a lot of the time, but overall this was pretty "meh。" i was hoping for something more unique for once that might set this apart from most other YA, like focusing on the relationship between ren and her half-brother, but then insta-love shows up to ruin the party again, and everything kind of goes downhill from there。 the pacing felt off too, especially near the this is a tough one to rate。 i mean, you can’t go wrong with japanese mythology, and the author does create a decent sense of atmosphere a lot of the time, but overall this was pretty "meh。" i was hoping for something more unique for once that might set this apart from most other YA, like focusing on the relationship between ren and her half-brother, but then insta-love shows up to ruin the party again, and everything kind of goes downhill from there。 the pacing felt off too, especially near the end where everything goes utterly batshit。 i didn't hate this book, but i don't think i need to bother with the second one either。 。。。more

I have been interested in Japanese folklore for many years now, and when I found out this book involved Shinigami, I had to read it。 Japanese mythos involving the afterlife is complicated, especially when Shinto and Bhuddism (particularly Amida) intertwine, so I enjoyed the death themes, and how Yomi is dark, but it isn't hell。 This book was fast-paced, dark, full of Yokai and gods from Japanese legend。 As others have said, the protagonist is a gray character, quite selfish but not completely ho I have been interested in Japanese folklore for many years now, and when I found out this book involved Shinigami, I had to read it。 Japanese mythos involving the afterlife is complicated, especially when Shinto and Bhuddism (particularly Amida) intertwine, so I enjoyed the death themes, and how Yomi is dark, but it isn't hell。 This book was fast-paced, dark, full of Yokai and gods from Japanese legend。 As others have said, the protagonist is a gray character, quite selfish but not completely horrible。 But that ending。。。I can't get over it。 I eagerly await the next one。 。。。more

I started off quite liking this one but it fell off for me。 The beginning took too long to get through and then the actual quest went by in a flash。 The ending also sped by。 I was looking for a great twist to save the day but the surprise felt fairly hollow。 It kind of felt out of left field, something that the reader could never have predicted, but still not actually that interesting of a twist in my opinion。 The characters started acting not like themselves。 I really enjoyed the lore though so I started off quite liking this one but it fell off for me。 The beginning took too long to get through and then the actual quest went by in a flash。 The ending also sped by。 I was looking for a great twist to save the day but the surprise felt fairly hollow。 It kind of felt out of left field, something that the reader could never have predicted, but still not actually that interesting of a twist in my opinion。 The characters started acting not like themselves。 I really enjoyed the lore though so I'm glad this one didn't work out for me。 。。。more
